In 1989 Mazda introduced the Mazda MX5 to the motoring public, putting a fresh perspective to the original concept of a fun, exiting to drive, affordable two seater sports car. Sixteen years on the third generation MX5 is poised to continue the success of the original . The new model isn’t a radical departure from the original, Mazda has continued the evolutionary design that has worked so well, and the new model remains true to the original concept. The most noticeable styling elements of the original , flowing curves and proportions looking through the sides have been retained, with a smoothing of the classic “Coke Bottle”shape apparent when compared to the outgoing model. Whilst its looks have evolved, the latest model is new from the ground up, and Mazda executives claim the only carry over component is the side repeater lamp.

Three full size clay models were developed by Mazda’s design studios in the US, Germany, and Japan before the designers settled on new shape. [the Japan design studio won out] The all new MX5 is bigger in all aspects, it has a new 2.0 litre engine with 118kW of power replacing the previous 1.8 litre engine, a new six speed automatic transmission with wheel mounted paddle shifts, larger cabin dimensions, extra safety features that now includes side airbags and anti whiplash seats. The new generation MX5 hasn’t gained any weight either to accommodate these extra features, the new body shell is nearly 50% torsionally stiffer but overall the new generation MX5 is only four kilograms heavier in base form then the superseded model. One element that hasn’t increased is the MX5’s fuel consumption , the new model even with its performance increase returns 8.5 L/100km with a manual transmission and 8.8L/100km for the new six speeds automatic. Both figures are better than the outgoing model. The good news for buyers is that with all the additional mechanical upgrades the base model MX5 pricing starts at $41,860, just under $1000 more than the superseded model.
