Short Description
The Spider has always occupied an important place in Alfa Romeo tradition (from the 1950s Giulietta Spider and the legendary Duetto up until the 1990s model) as the perfect embodiment of the ‘free emotive’ idea of a car. Although they were far from perfect, the highly attractive personality of Spiders made them ‘musthaves’ for drivers who like driving convertibles. Powered by engines roaring under a seductive bodywork, they aroused all the senses. Inheriting such a lineage, the new arrival has a lot to live up to … as far as the bodywork is concerned, with Pininfarina’s design touch this objective has been largely met.The Spider has always occupied an important place in Alfa Romeo tradition (from the 1950s Giulietta Spider and the legendary Duetto up until the 1990s model) as the perfect embodiment of the ‘free emotive’ idea of a car. Based on the Brera, itself based on the shortened wheelbase of the 159, the lines of this Spider are enchanting. With the sculpted shape of its boot, its curvaceous wings and its front end aggressively styled with two sets of three headlights, this Spider will not fail to be the centre of attention. What a fantastic success! From whatever angle you view this car, you cannot fail to be seduced by its charm.
Mechanics
Given this great styling, you would obviously expect to find a feisty performance. Under the boot of our test drive car lurked a 2.2 litre four-cylinder engine developing 185 bhp at 6,500 rpm and torque of 230 Nm at 4,500 rpm. Although this looks good on paper, in practice we found it lacked the character of the Alfa engines we knew of old. Hampered by the car’s considerable weight (over oneand- a-half tonnes without load), the engine proved to be linear, with constant thrust over the whole range of speeds. At least it had the merit of getting up to 7,000 rpm, but did this without displaying any raw power. The models in this range have two levels of finish (’Spider’ and ‘Exclusive’), choice of two JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichometric) petrol engines (a 2.4 with 185 bhp also available in Selespeed version, and a 3.2 V6 Q4 with 260 bhp), a diesel engine (2.4 JTDm with 240 bhp) and a Selespeed 6-speed robotised manual gearbox configured for sporty driving. The 3.2 V6 engine is also available with a ‘Q-Tronic’ automatic gearbox.
